The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared Tuesday, August 26, 2025, as a day of protest across university campuses nationwide. The demonstration is part of the union’s ongoing agitation for improved welfare, better working conditions, and the fulfillment of agreements reached with the Federal Government.
According to ASUU, the protests will take place simultaneously in federal and state universities, with lecturers and members expected to stage peaceful rallies within campuses and surrounding communities. The union emphasized that the action is not a strike but a mass mobilization to draw public attention to the “poor state of lecturers’ welfare and the continued neglect of Nigeria’s education sector.”
ASUU leaders have consistently highlighted issues such as unpaid allowances, inadequate funding of universities, infrastructural decay, and the need to review conditions of service for academic staff. They argue that the government has failed to fully implement the Memorandum of Action signed after previous negotiations.
Student unions across some universities have expressed mixed reactions. While some pledged solidarity with the lecturers, others voiced concern that the protest may disrupt academic calendars already strained by past strikes.
Observers note that the planned protest may heighten tensions in the education sector if a lasting resolution is not reached between the union and the Federal Government.
ASUU has urged Nigerians to support the demonstration, insisting that investing in lecturers’ welfare and public universities is key to reviving the nation’s education system.
