President Bola Tinubu has approved N2 billion as a special relief package for victims of the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, following the Palm Sunday attack that claimed over 30 lives and displaced many others.
The approval, announced by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), is aimed at providing immediate succour to families who lost loved ones, the injured, and those whose properties were destroyed during the attack on Angwan Rukuba and other affected communities.
According to a statement from the Presidency, the fund will be disbursed through NEMA in collaboration with the Plateau State Government to ensure that assistance reaches the most vulnerable victims. The package includes cash transfers to bereaved families, medical support for the injured, and temporary shelter for displaced persons.
The Presidential intervention comes amid growing public outrage over the recurring attacks in the North-Central region, with many calling for more decisive action against the perpetrators. Tinubu also used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to ending the cycle of violence on the Plateau and across the country, stating that “no stone will be left unturned” in bringing the attackers to justice.
The Palm Sunday massacre, carried out by suspected gunmen, targeted worshippers and villagers in Angwan Rukuba, leaving the community in mourning. Security agencies have since launched investigations, with several suspects already in detention.
The relief package is expected to be disbursed within the coming weeks, with beneficiaries to be identified through a verification process led by state and federal authorities.
