Russian President Vladimir Putin met with United States envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow on Wednesday, just two days before a key deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Russia to halt its military offensive in Ukraine or face fresh sanctions.

The Kremlin confirmed the meeting, which comes amid heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington over the ongoing war in Ukraine. President Trump, who has repeatedly claimed he could end the conflict within 24 hours of taking office, has given Moscow until Friday to demonstrate meaningful progress toward peace.

Despite diplomatic efforts, including three rounds of peace talks held in Istanbul, both Russia and Ukraine have failed to reach a ceasefire agreement. The negotiations have stalled, with both sides remaining deeply divided on key issues.

Meanwhile, Russia has intensified its military campaign, launching drone and missile attacks against Ukraine at a record pace. Reports also indicate an accelerated ground offensive, heightening fears of further escalation.

Witkoff’s visit to Moscow is seen as a last-ditch diplomatic push to avert another round of US sanctions, which could target critical sectors of the Russian economy. While the outcome of the meeting remains undisclosed, observers are closely monitoring developments as Friday’s deadline approaches.
