The Olubadan-in-Council is convening today, Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, to formally declare the Olubadan stool vacant following the recent passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin. The council will also deliberate on nominating the next monarch.

Sources close to the council indicate that all traditional protocols point to High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the current Otun Olubadan, as the likely successor. As the most senior chief in the civil line of Ibadan’s unique hierarchical chieftaincy system, Ladoja is widely expected to emerge as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Once the council reaches a resolution, its recommendation will be forwarded to the Oyo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters for ratification by Governor Seyi Makinde. The nomination, if approved, will pave the way for Ladoja’s coronation as the next Olubadan.

Today’s meeting, the first of its kind at the newly constructed Olubadan Palace, marks a significant step in the succession process for the revered Ibadan throne. It follows the completion of the traditional 21-day mourning period for the late Oba Olakulehin, who passed away on July 7, 2025.

High Chief Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, has promised not to delay the filling of vacant chieftaincy positions once confirmed, pledging to uphold Ibadan’s customs and promote unity across Ibadanland.

The outcome of today’s deliberations is expected to officially usher in a new era for the ancient city as Ibadan awaits its next Olubadan.
