A prominent figure in Nigerian politics, Cornelius Adebayo, has died at the age of 84. Adebayo, a chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and a disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, played a significant role in shaping the country’s political landscape.

Adebayo’s illustrious career spanned several decades, including his tenure as Governor of Kwara State under the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) platform from 1983 to 1984.

He was a trailblazer as the first democratically elected Yoruba Governor of Kwara State. Prior to his governorship, Adebayo served as a Senator representing Kwara State from 1979 to 1983.

A native of Igbaja in Kwara State, Adebayo was a key figure in the fight against military rule. During his exile in Canada, he led NADECO and participated in various campaigns against military rule.

Upon his return to Nigeria in 1998, he joined the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and later became a member of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s unity government, serving as Minister of Communications from July 2003 to August 2006.

Born on February 24, 1941, Adebayo lived a quiet life in Abuja before his passing on Wednesday morning.

His death marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
