Leaders and members of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, Afenifere, gathered at the Lekki, Lagos residence of the late Chief Ayodele Adebanjo on Sunday, February 23.

The event was a tribute to Adebanjo, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.

The gathering was attended by various constituencies within Afenifere, including members from different states, former governors, and prominent Yoruba citizens.

National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Comrade Jare Ajayi, confirmed the event.

Adebanjo, a one-time acting leader of Afenifere, was hailed as a well-respected leader and a strong voice in Nigeria.

Former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Segun Mimiko, delivered a message from Afenifere’s National Leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, describing Adebanjo as “a patriot par excellence!”

Fasoranti praised Adebanjo’s contributions to Nigeria’s independence and democracy, saying his legacy will remain indelible in Nigeria’s history. He also commended Adebanjo’s commitment to a truly federal Nigeria and egalitarianism.

Other notable attendees, including former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and Asiwaju of Yewa, Otunba Samuel Ibikunle, eulogized Adebanjo’s leadership and virtues.

Secretary General of Afenifere, Agbaakin Ademola Folarin, described Adebanjo as “a great leader and a highly notable patriot.”

The event marked a rare unity among various tendencies within Afenifere, with representatives from different Yoruba organizations in attendance.

Adebanjo’s family expressed gratitude for the honor and assured that his legacies would be sustained.

Adebanjo’s final rites are scheduled to take place from April 30 to May 4, 2025, with events including a Day of Tributes, Service of Songs, Wake, Final Burial Service, and Thanksgiving Service.
