The Alaafin of Oyo has shed light on the etymological origin of the Yoruba royal salutation Kabiyesi, widely used in addressing kings and revered traditional rulers.
Speaking during a cultural discourse, the monarch explained that Kabiyesi is derived from the Yoruba phrase “Ka bi o si”, which translates to “None can question you” or “You are beyond reproach.”
According to him, the expression embodies the deep respect, reverence, and spiritual authority traditionally accorded to Yoruba monarchs, who were seen not only as political leaders but also as divine representatives of the gods and custodians of culture.
He noted, however, that while the title reflects the sacred and unquestionable aura surrounding Yoruba royalty, it also carries a moral reminder that kings must rule with wisdom, justice, and humility, as the wellbeing of their subjects remains their foremost responsibility.
The Alaafin emphasized that understanding the true origin of such titles is vital to appreciating the richness of Yoruba civilization, which is often conveyed through language, proverbs, and cultural expressions.
