The Egusi seeds from Oyo State, which made history as the first Nigerian agricultural produce sent to the International Space Station (ISS), have successfully returned to Earth following their groundbreaking journey in space.
The splashdown, completed earlier today, marks the end of a scientific mission aimed at studying how microgravity affects the growth and resilience of Egusi—a staple crop in Nigerian cuisine. The seeds were part of an international agricultural research collaboration involving Nigerian space scientist Dr. Temidayo Oniosun, who championed the project to explore space-based solutions to food security.
During their time aboard the ISS, the seeds were subjected to controlled environmental conditions and monitored for biological changes. Scientists hope the findings will open new frontiers in climate-resilient agriculture, helping farmers adapt to changing environmental challenges on Earth.
This achievement is being hailed as a milestone for Nigeria’s space science community, symbolizing the country’s expanding role in global scientific research and innovation.
