TETFund Disburses ₦100bn to Strengthen Medical Training in Nigerian Universities

Katsina, Nigeria – In a major push to tackle Nigeria’s shortage of healthcare professionals and stem the persistent brain drain in the sector, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has released over ₦100 billion to selected tertiary institutions across the country for the expansion of training in medical sciences.

The Chairman of the TETFund Governing Board, Aminu Masari, made the disclosure in Katsina on Saturday while addressing journalists. Masari explained that the intervention is part of the Federal Government’s deliberate efforts to improve medical education and healthcare delivery in Nigeria, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to reverse the migration of skilled health workers abroad.

According to him, the funds will be dedicated to upgrading medical school infrastructure, equipping laboratories, enhancing teaching hospital facilities, and expanding training opportunities for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other medical professionals. He stressed that the initiative would not only improve the quality of healthcare training but also encourage more professionals to remain and work in Nigeria.

Masari added that the TETFund is working closely with the National Universities Commission (NUC), medical councils, and relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective utilisation of the funds and the introduction of modern teaching methods. He expressed optimism that the intervention would produce highly skilled graduates capable of meeting both local and global healthcare demands.
