ZeroToleranceLagos: LASG cracks down on street begging, arrests 27 Including minors

The Lagos State Government has intensified its efforts to rid the state of street begging, arresting 27 individuals, including 15 minors, for constituting a public nuisance.

The Lagos State Environmental Taskforce conducted a raid operation across major routes, including Awolowo Way, Falomo Roundabout, Ikoyi, Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, and Lekki Road.

According to Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, “the state Government will no longer tolerate street begging, as it poses a significant threat to public safety and sanitation”.

Wahab emphasized that the Government is committed to providing support and rehabilitation programs for those affected, ensuring they are transferred to appropriate government facilities in line with relevant laws.

The arrested individuals were found begging in the middle of vehicular traffic and hold-ups, putting themselves and others at risk.

This crackdown on street begging is part of the state Government’s broader efforts to restore sanity and cleanliness to Lagos.

As Wahab noted, “we must take pride in our city and work together to create a safer, healthier, and more prosperous environment for all”.

The Lagos State Government has urged citizens to report any instances of street begging or other environmental concerns to the relevant authorities.

The state Government aims to promote a culture of cleanliness, safety, and respect for the law.
