The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State has raised concerns over the alleged poisoning and rustling of its members’ cattle by criminal elements in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA).

According to Risku Muhammed, Chairman of MACBAN in Benue, over 20 cows were poisoned at Ucha village in Agatu, while over 200 cows were rustled last Thursday.

Muhammed alleged that a farmer in Ucha community poisoned the cows with rice chaff, leading to the death of 13 cows, while seven others are undergoing treatment.

“I got reports from my members in Agatu LGA that a criminal had poisoned rice chaff and invited one of our members to graze on it. Unfortunately, 13 cows died instantly, while seven are being treated by a veterinary doctor,” he said.

The Agatu LGA Chairman, Melvin Ejeh, acknowledged receipt of the complaint and assured that the matter is being investigated.

A farmer has been arrested in connection with the poisoned cows. Ejeh noted that Agatu has enjoyed relative peace, thanks to the Peace Committee set up to review and sustain the peace process daily.

“We have received complaints from Miyetti Allah, and investigations are ongoing. Agatu has been enjoying peace, and this is as a result of the Peace Committee that was set up,” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the development, stating that investigations are ongoing, and a suspect has been arrested.

The incident has sparked concerns over the fragile peace between herders and local communities in Benue State.
