Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Thursday defeated Gabon 4–1 after extra time in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture, moving a step closer to securing a spot in the intercontinental playoff stage.

The match, played at the Stade Prince Moulay Al Hassan in Rabat, Morocco, was tightly contested, with both sides struggling to break the deadlock during regulation time.

Nigeria took the lead in the 78th minute through Akor Adams, who pounced on a defensive error to give the Super Eagles a deserved advantage. Gabon, however, responded late, with Mario Lemina equalising in the 89th minute to force extra time.

In the added period, Nigeria showed greater determination and fitness. Chidera Ejuke restored the lead for the Super Eagles in the 97th minute with a composed finish after a quick counterattack, while Victor Osimhen sealed the victory in the 102nd minute with a fine strike from a tight angle.

The win puts Nigeria firmly in contention for the final round of African qualifiers as they await the outcome of the tie between Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which will determine their next opponent.

Analysts hailed the Super Eagles’ improved coordination, with Osimhen and Ejuke earning praise for their attacking display and resilience.

Thursday’s result strengthens Nigeria’s campaign for a return to the World Cup after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.
