President Zelenskiy Calls for Faster Fortifications in Key Sectors in Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for faster fortifications in key sectors under attack by Russian forces, particularly in Eastern Ukraine, the focal point of Moscow’s advances 21 months into its invasion.

Zelenskiy made his appeal after touring Ukrainian positions in the North-East, one of several areas where Russian forces have been attempting to make recent inroads and recapture areas retaken by Ukrainian troops a year ago.

He stated that one of his meetings with Commanders was about fortifications.

“There should be a boost and an acceleration in the construction of structures in all major sectors where reinforcement is needed,” Zelenskiy stated in his nightly video address.

Naturally, this means that the Donetsk region’s Avdiivka, Maryinka, and other sectors will receive the most attention.

Since mid-October, Russian forces have focused their attention on the devastated town of Avdiivka, known for its vast coking plant and its location as a gateway to the Russian-held regional center of Donetsk, 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the east.

Military spokesman Oleksandr Shtupun said Ukrainian forces had repelled Russian attacks on the coking plant.
