The Chairmen of Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South Local Governments, Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo and Afeez Balogun, have announced plans to register no fewer than 8,000 commercial motorcyclists operating within their council areas for the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme.

Oyegbola-Sodipo disclosed this on Tuesday during a joint press briefing with his Abeokuta South counterpart at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ogun State Council Secretariat, Iwe-Irohin House, Abeokuta.

The initiative, according to the LG bosses, aligns with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to ensuring grassroots residents β€” particularly the poorest and most vulnerable in the informal sector β€” have unfettered access to quality healthcare services.

Oyegbola-Sodipo emphasized that commercial motorcyclists, who often face occupational hazards and financial barriers to healthcare, would greatly benefit from the scheme. He explained that the exercise would involve proper registration, biometric capture, and issuance of health insurance cards to beneficiaries, enabling them to access medical services in accredited facilities across the state.

Balogun, in his remarks, described the initiative as a strategic step toward safeguarding the health of a critical segment of the state’s workforce. He urged commercial motorcyclists to embrace the scheme, noting that good health is essential for productivity and sustainable livelihoods.

The LG chairmen further assured that the exercise would be conducted in collaboration with relevant transport unions, community leaders, and health officials to ensure transparency and smooth implementation.
