June 30, 2023 2 min read

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is set to host a dinner for the Super Falcons before their departure for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from July 20 to August 20. The dinner, organized by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), will be held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja on Saturday and will be attended by government officials and sports officials.

The event is expected to be attended by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Ismaila Abubakar, as well as other top sports officials. The NFF officials, including the President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, will also be present. Corporate leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, and various football stakeholders are also expected to attend.

After the dinner, the Super Falcons, who have won the African championship nine times, will depart for a 15-day training camp in Australia. They will then participate in the tournament, with their first match against Canada on July 21 at Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium. Subsequently, they will face Australia and the Republic of Ireland on July 27 and July 31, respectively, at Lang Park in Brisbane.

The Australia and New Zealand 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be the largest in history, featuring 32 teams, the same number as the men’s finals in Qatar last year. Nigeria’s team captain, Onome Ebi, will be one of the oldest players at the tournament at the age of 40, alongside Brazil’s Marta and Canada’s Christine Sinclair.
