The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Friday, August 21.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora and urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to others.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said, adding that these are qualities Nigeria needs “now more than ever.”
He encouraged all Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to reflect on these values and apply them to the challenges facing the country.
The minister also called on citizens to use the celebration as an opportunity to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that maintaining national unity is a shared responsibility.
He urged Nigerians to celebrate the occasion with restraint and mutual respect, while wishing the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid.
Tunji-Ojo further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across the country.
The declaration means workers across Nigeria will observe Tuesday, August 25, as a nationwide public holiday in honour of Eid ul Mawlid.
