An explosion rocks Taiwo Street area of Idi-Araba in Mushin, Lagos State, on Thursday, April 3, 2025, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake.

The blast, which occurred after a scavenger attempted to dismantle a military-grade grenade, claimed the life of one person and injured three others.

According to eyewitnesses, the scavenger had discovered the grenade among scrap materials and, unaware of its deadly potential, tried to take it apart.

The grenade detonated instantly, killing the scavenger on the spot and injuring three bystanders.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident and reported that they received a distress call around 1:30 p.m. alerting them to a suspected bomb explosion in the area.

Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit in Ikeja were swiftly deployed to the scene to investigate and ensure public safety.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion was accidental and triggered by the scavenger’s attempt to tamper with the grenade.

The injured individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while the body of the deceased was taken to a public morgue for autopsy.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine how the military explosives ended up in civilian hands.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious items or activities to the authorities.
