The Akoko-Edo Development Association (AEDA) has formally requested the division of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area into three separate LGAs, citing the need for more efficient governance and equitable development.

The proposal, submitted to the Committee on Constitution Review, suggests the creation of Akoko-Edo North, Akoko-Edo South, and Akoko-Edo Central LGAs.

According to the group’s chairman, Dr. Charles Jagun, the large and diverse population spread across a vast territory necessitates this division.

“We are confident that the creation of Akoko-Edo Central LGA, Akoko-Edo North, and Akoko-Edo South LGAs will significantly benefit the people of Akoko-Edo,” he stated.

The group believes that splitting the local government into three is imperative for harnessing the socio-economic potentials embedded within these regions.

“Akoko-Edo LGA created in 1963 has a rich historical background as one of the oldest local government areas in Nigeria,” the group noted.

The AEDA highlighted that while other divisions in Edo State were split into multiple LGAs, Akoko-Edo remained singular, despite its size and population.

They referenced an attempt by the government of Ambrose Alli during the Second Republic to create three local government councils from the then Akoko-Edo local council, which was later discarded for political reasons.

“We welcome the opportunity to discuss this proposal further and answer any questions you may have,” Dr. Jagun stated, emphasizing the potential benefits of the division for the people of Akoko-Edo.
