Residents of Badagry West Local Council Development Area in Lagos State have raised concerns over an alleged plan to construct an Igbo traditional palace on land belonging to the Egun people.

Community leaders and youth representatives under various Badagry West bodies said they were not opposed to people of Igbo origin residing in the area, but described the attempt to establish an Igbo palace as β€œunacceptable” and β€œa violation of cultural boundaries.”

According to a statement circulating within the community, the residents maintained that Egun land already has a recognized and living traditional ruler, and that building another palace for a non-indigenous king would amount to disrespect for local authority and tradition.

They also called on the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities to investigate the development and prevent potential tension in the area.

As of press time, neither the Lagos State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs nor representatives of the Igbo community in Badagry had issued an official response to the allegations.

Badagry West, one of the coastal regions of Lagos, is predominantly inhabited by the Egun people, who share cultural and historical ties with communities along the Nigeria–Benin border.
