Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called for calm and renewed diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United States following President Donald Trump’s threat of military action against the country.

In a statement issued on Monday, Adeleke urged Washington to pursue peaceful dialogue and strengthen cooperation with Abuja rather than adopt punitive or military measures.

“I appeal to the Presidency of the United States to support Nigeria in fully implementing our new national security strategy. It is comprehensive and capable of tackling banditry and terroristic killings across the country,” the governor said.

Adeleke expressed sympathy to victims of recent violence in northern Nigeria and described Trump’s comments as a wake-up call to intensify security operations through coordinated partnerships with global allies.

“We need help from the United States and others to overcome terrorism. High-level engagement at the presidential level will allow the American government to better understand our ongoing security efforts, achievements, and challenges,” he said.

The Osun governor stressed that international collaboration, not confrontation, remains the best path forward, noting that a “peaceful interface between Abuja and Washington holds the key rather than military intervention.”

He praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its diplomatic approach in addressing the controversy and urged Nigerians to close ranks in support of national security efforts.

“This is the time to unite as a nation. We must back the President in protecting citizens and enforcing the constitution. Nigeria needs peace, not war, to deepen democracy and safeguard our people,” Adeleke said.

The statement was signed by Mallam Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson to the governor.
