South-West Retirees Demand N40,000 Minimum Living Pension

September 22, 2023 2 min read

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, South-West Zone, on Thursday, called on the six South-West governors to approve N40,100 as minimum living pension for retirees in the region.

The NUP also demanded payment of backlog of gratuities and pensions owed its members across the states.

Abatan called for the harmonisation of pension for NUP members β€œto truly get what belongs to them at the right time without delay and in tune with reality.”

He said: β€œWe are requesting that our governors in the South-West should please address the payments of gratuities that have amounted to billions of naira in the various states, payment of arrears of pensions and harmonisation.

β€œWe also want our governments in the South-West to address the issue of pension because we have pensioners in all the six states of the South-West that earn as little as N350, N500, N600 in some states. Pensioners want a minimum living pension of up to N40,100. We want harmonisation of pension.”

The pensioners called on President Bola Tinubu and state governors to desist from sacking workers at both the federal and state levels, adding that the removal of fuel subsidy had caused more hardship to the citizens.

Meanwhile, the NUP also chided former President Olusegun Obasanjo for publicly humiliating traditional rulers in Oyo State by commanding them to stand on their feet at a public function in Iseyin.

Abatan said: β€œLooking at the incident in Oyo State last week, we want to say that we frown seriously at this denigration and it stands condemned in its entirety. We expect and hope that Obasanjo is going to make amends with the traditional rulers by apologising because it is not right to denigrate the tradition and culture of our land.”
