President Donald Trump has confirmed that his administration is preparing to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, saying the process is already underway and nearing completion.
Speaking during a briefing, Trump stated that the designation would be issued “in the strongest and most powerful terms,” adding that “final documents are being drawn.” The President did not provide a specific timeline but suggested that the formal announcement would follow once all procedural steps are concluded.
The decision, if finalized, would represent a major shift in U.S. foreign and security policy. The designation would enable the U.S. government to impose sanctions on individuals, groups, and entities linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, restricting financial transactions, travel, and cooperation with organizations suspected of affiliation.
The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, is a political and religious movement with a broad network across the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Europe. While some countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates designate the group as a terrorist organization, others continue to recognize it as a political or social movement.
U.S. officials and analysts say the move could have diplomatic implications, particularly for nations where Brotherhood-aligned political parties participate in government or operate as legally registered organizations.
The White House has not released additional details on how the designation will be implemented or whether allied governments have been formally consulted.
