The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, who allegedly suffered fatal burns at the hands of his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Haruna, during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Uyo.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on September 22, 2025, following a heated argument between the couple, who had been married for just six months. Lieutenant Haruna, who served as the Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion, sustained severe burns after household items were allegedly set ablaze by his wife during the altercation.
He was initially treated at the Battalion Medical Facility before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on October 8.
In a statement on Tuesday, Captain Lawal Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, described the incident as “tragic” and condemned all forms of domestic violence. The statement emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among personnel and their families.
“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognizing the imperative of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect within families,” the statement read in part. Captain Muhammad also extended condolences to the family of the late officer.
The Army has not disclosed any details regarding legal action against the suspect, but the case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence within military communities.
