NVCB cancels film classification overderogatory title “Badagry”

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NVCB) has cancelled the classification of a film with a title deemed derogatory to the image of Badagry.

The decision was made after a concerned citizen reached out to the NVCB’s Director-General, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, regarding the film’s title.

The post was made available on the official X handle of CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer.

According to Hundeyin, the film’s title was an affront to the dignity of Badagry, a land with a rich cultural heritage and significant contributions to Nigeria’s creative and tourism industries.

“I can’t believe one creatively shallow producer will just sit somewhere and choose to malign the image and dignity of one of the most historically precious pieces of land on the continent of Africa,” Hundeyin wrote.

His post noted that Dr. Husseini reportedly took immediate action, contacting the film’s producers, who claimed the title was chosen because the film was shot in Badagry.

However, Dr. Husseini deemed this excuse unprofessional.

“What a very unprofessional excuse,” the citizen noted. “Many of the films depicting Islamic conflicts are shot in the desert area of California.” Dr. Husseini’s prompt decision to cancel the film’s classification has been welcomed by many, who see it as a protection of Badagry’s image and dignity.

“The only way that film will ever get released in this country is if they change the title,” Dr. Husseini reportedly said.

The film’s content is reportedly a crime story unrelated to Badagry. Badagry has produced notable figures, including Pa Olatunji, who became the first Nigerian to win a Grammy Award.

“Producers from anywhere in the world are welcome by the people to utilise the serene and breathtaking scenic uniqueness of Badagry for films and all multimedia projects,” the citizen emphasized.

“But while you are at it, do not malign and trample on the image and branding of the land and its people.” Hundeyin noted
