The Lagos State Government has directed the immediate reopening of the Oko-Oba Abattoir following the fulfillment of sanitation and hygienic prescriptions by the operators.

According to Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment, the operators have substantially complied with the minimum benchmark for abattoir operations in the state.

This was contained in a tweet by the state Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab on Saturday.

In a tweet, Wahab announced, “LagosStateGov has reopened the Oko-Oba Abattoir after operators met the required sanitation standards. Kudos to all involved! Let’s maintain the hygiene and ensure a healthy environment”

The reopening comes with conditions, including monthly inspections by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources officials to ensure compliance with sanitation standards. Wahab urged operators to avoid unsanitary activities, waste mismanagement, and unhygienic handling of animal products.

The abattoir was initially closed due to flagrant non-compliance with sanitation regulations.

However, after working with the operators to meet the required standards, the state government has deemed it fit for reopening.

The state government will continue to monitor the situation to ensure sustained compliance.
