The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), one of the largest churches in the world, has suspended two of its ministers, Pastor Ayorinde Ade Bello and Deacon Oke Mayowa, due to serious allegations of involvement in homosexuality.
According to an internal memo dated October 28, 2024, and signed by RCCG National Overseer Pastor Sunday Akande, the two ministers have been temporarily relieved of their duties pending the outcome of an investigation.
The memo reaffirms RCCG’s commitment to its scriptural teachings and emphasizes the church’s responsibility to address these concerns with gravity.
Pastor Akande noted, “Our mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, and we must address these allegations with the seriousness they deserve.
“This is a precautionary measure to uphold the integrity and values of our church,” Pastor Akande stated.
RCCG’s position on homosexuality is based on scriptures such as Leviticus 18:22 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which the church interprets as foundational principles for its mission.
Pastor Akande has instructed the church’s Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration to lead a thorough and confidential inquiry into the matter, aiming for a resolution within two weeks.
During this period, the suspended ministers, along with any other individuals involved, are to refrain from participating in church activities.
“This is a precautionary measure to uphold the integrity and values of our church,” Pastor Akande stated.
This investigation is not the first instance where RCCG has confronted issues it views as inconsistent with its doctrines. As one of Nigeria’s largest Christian organizations, RCCG frequently addresses matters it considers contrary to its principles, prioritizing a strict adherence to its interpretation of biblical teachings.
The outcome of the investigation may influence RCCG’s future approach to similar situations.
Homosexuality is illegal in Nigeria, and RCCG’s actions reflect its commitment to upholding both biblical teachings and national laws.
