Over 90 killed, 50 hospitalized in Jigawa fuel explosion

A fuel tanker explosion has claimed the lives of over 90 people and left more than 50 hospitalized in Majiya village, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

According to report, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday when a fuel-laden tanker crashed and later burst into flames.

Eyewitnesses reported that villagers had gathered to scoop fuel from the overturned tanker when the explosion occurred.

“The villagers were taking fuel from the tanker when it suddenly exploded, killing many people,” said a witness.

DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway.

“We are currently investigating the incident and will provide further updates as information becomes available,” Adams said.

According to Shiisu, β€œToday (Wednesday) a petrol tanker from Port Harcourt going to Nguru in Yobe state reached Majiya village of Taura local government area at around 12:30am the driver lost control at Majiya and falls down.

“The content in the tanker flooded gutters and drainages in village. The villagers started fetching the fuel where the petrol was and it went in flames.

“As a result 95 people confirmed died and 50 have been hospitalised receiving treatment,” he added.

The explosion and resulting fireball caused severe injuries and fatalities among those present. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

This tragic incident highlights the risks associated with fuel tanker explosions and the need for increased safety measures.
