Popular Nigerian female actor, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, known professionally as Kiekie, has responded to critics who asked her to stop using her native Yoruba dialect in her video content.

Kiekie had posted a video showcasing Yoruba cultural dresses and heritage, complete with a voiceover in the Yoruba language, on her Facebook page.

However, a social media user, Loveth Okeah, commented, suggesting that Kiekie limit her use of Yoruba dialects.

Loveth Okeah wrote, “Kie Kie, you’re a global star. Your audience are beyond Lagosians. You never know who you’re inspiring abroad. Please limit your use of Nigerian dialects .. My opinion though… had to mute the audio to enjoy the video cos I don’t understand the language.”

Kiekie responded, proudly identifying herself as a Yoruba woman and asserting that her language is an integral part of her identity.

“Loveth Okeah, my language, as for many others as well, is part of our true identity. Don’t let the idea of global take away from you what you uniquely own. Next time appreciate the language as I appreciate yours anytime I hear it,” Kiekie said.

She concluded by reaffirming her pride in her Yoruba heritage, saying, “I’m a Yoruba girl to the world!”

Kiekie’s response has garnered widespread support from her followers, who have encouraged her to continue using her native dialect in her content.

Many have expressed their love for her Yoruba-infused videos, praising her for promoting and celebrating her cultural heritage.
