Yoruba culture promoter, Prince Segun Akanni, honoured with prestigious arts award

Prince Segun Akanni, a renowned cultural ambassador and promoter of African arts and heritage, has been recognized with the 2024 Arts Acclaim Award by the City of Brampton.

The award is part of the city’s annual Citizen Awards Program, which celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to the community.

Akanni, Convener of the Pan-Afrikan Drum Festival in Canada, was commended for his remarkable work in promoting African culture and diaspora engagement through the arts.

His leadership in multicultural initiatives and production of high-impact artistic content has elevated Brampton’s artistic landscape and deepened global appreciation for African heritage.

The award selection committee praised Akanni’s dedication to cultural preservation and innovation, highlighting his work through platforms like

The African Heritage Magazine and the African Canadian Heritage Awards. These initiatives have showcased unsung heroes, inspired emerging artists, and fostered unity among diverse communities.

At the grand ceremony held on May 8, 2025, at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, Akanni expressed gratitude to the City of Brampton, Mayor Patrick Brown, and the Citizen Awards Committee.

He stated, “This award is not just for me, but for every artist and cultural leader striving to keep our stories alive. I’m humbled to be part of a city that values and celebrates the arts in such a meaningful way.”

Akanni’s recognition reinforces the power of storytelling, heritage, and artistic expression in building bridges and shaping communities. His contributions embody the spirit of the Arts Acclaim Award, achieving excellence while inspiring others through creativity and vision.
