WIKE HAILS TINUBU’S BOLD LEADERSHIP ON FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as a bold and difficult decision to remove fuel subsidy, saying the policy has increased monthly revenue allocations to the three tiers of government.

Speaking on Thursday at the 2025 Innovate Africa Conference in Abuja, Wike said that although the decision initially triggered hardship and public criticism, it has now begun to yield positive results.

According to him, the removal of the subsidy has allowed federal, state, and local governments to share over N2 trillion monthly, compared to previous allocations of less than N500 billion.

Wike stated, “You may not be right, but you must take a decision, and that’s what this present government is doing. The day Mr President decided to remove fuel subsidy, I don’t know how many people will be in a position to take that decision. It was bold, very difficult, but sacrifices must be made.”

He added that the situation has begun to stabilise, noting that despite the initial rise in fuel prices and inflation, the long-term gains are becoming evident.

Wike said, “Before now, we never had more than N500 billion shared among the three tiers of government. Today, not less than N2 trillion is being shared every month because of the removal of the fuel subsidy.”
