Residents of Oworonshoki in Lagos on Monday staged a protest against the ongoing demolition exercise in their community.

The demonstration, which began in the Oworonshoki area, spilled onto the Third Mainland Bridge, causing a major traffic gridlock on one of the city’s busiest routes.

Commuters reported being stranded for several hours as protesters blocked sections of the bridge to draw attention to their grievances. The residents alleged that the demolition exercise has rendered many families homeless without adequate notice or provision of alternatives.

Security operatives, including police officers, were deployed to the scene in a bid to restore order and ease traffic flow.

As at press time, authorities had yet to issue an official statement regarding the protest or address the concerns raised by the affected residents.

The Third Mainland Bridge remains a critical link between the Lagos Mainland and Island, and any obstruction often results in widespread disruption to movement across the city.
