Video: Lagos to enforce ban on Single-Use plastics from July 1

The Lagos State Government has announced that it will strictly enforce the ban on single-use plastics starting July 1, 2025, as part of a broader effort to curb environmental violations across the state.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement during a media briefing, emphasizing that the state will no longer tolerate environmental abuse.

Wahab disclosed that over 3,000 environmental offenders have already been arrested, and the state is intensifying surveillance and advocacy campaigns to ensure compliance.

He warned that offenders who dump refuse illegally, litter the streets, or deface the environment will face severe penalties, including fines of up to ₦250,000 or three months in jail.

The commissioner urged residents to take responsibility for proper waste disposal, especially during the upcoming Sallah celebrations.

He encouraged residents to bag their waste and hand it over to assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, rather than dumping it in drains or medians.

Wahab emphasized the importance of protecting the environment for current and future generations, stating, “The time for change is now”

The Lagos State Government is determined to maintain a clean and healthy environment, and residents are expected to cooperate with the authorities to achieve this goal.
