A disturbing incident of violence has disrupted the festive atmosphere in Ile-Ife, leaving a senior citizen brutally assaulted and sparking widespread outrage.

Eyewitnesses report that the victim, an elderly woman, was participating in the Obatala Festival on January 20, 2025, when she was suddenly and viciously attacked by a group of assailants.

According to a video obtained by The Yoruba Times, the woman recounted her ordeal, stating that she was stoned by some individuals during the nighttime procession of the Obatala deity.

She further revealed that she is aware of the perpetrators’ origins.

Although some have speculated that the perpetrators may be Islamic extremists in the locality, there is currently no concrete evidence to support this claim.

Locals have appealed to the Osun State Governor to launch an immediate investigation into the attack, ensuring that justice is served to prevent similar incidents in the future that could escalate into uncontrollable violence.

The community is calling for a thorough probe to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice, promoting a safe and peaceful environment for all residents.
