Skip Classes, Lose Your Visa – U.S. Embassy Warns International Students

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a strong warning to international students, cautioning them against skipping classes or abandoning their academic programs without proper authorization. According to the embassy, such actions may lead to immediate visa revocation and could affect eligibility for future U.S. visas.

In a statement released on Monday via its official social media platform, the embassy stated:

“If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your programmes of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas.”

The advisory serves as a reminder to Nigerian students studying in the U.S. under F-1 or M-1 visas that strict compliance with immigration and academic policies is mandatory.

The warning follows recent crackdowns on international student visa violations across the United States. Reports indicate that over 4,700 visa records have been terminated this year alone, with more than 1,200 students from 187 institutions affected by tightened enforcement.

The U.S. authorities have emphasized that all international students must maintain full-time enrollment, attend classes regularly, and notify their schools of any changes to their academic status. Even minor infractions or absences without official clearance could result in SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) termination and loss of legal status.

This move aligns with similar advisories previously issued to students from countries like India and Bangladesh, as the U.S. government continues its efforts to regulate and monitor foreign student compliance more closely.
