“I Can’t Do Anything About Insecurity Until I Become President in 2027” – Gov Makinde Tells Oyo Parents as Abducted Children Remain in Captivity

May 30, 2026 2 min read

Governor Seyi Makinde has told the people of Oyo State that he cannot do anything about the growing wave of kidnappings and abductions in the state until he is elected president in 2027. Speaking in Ibadan on Saturday while accepting the presidential nomination of the African People’s Movement, Makinde said governors lack constitutional control over security agencies despite being referred to as Chief Security Officers.

“Today, innocent schoolchildren and citizens abducted by criminals remain in captivity in Oyo State. As Governor of Oyo State, I carry the burden of being called the Chief Security Officer of the state, yet lacking constitutional control over the security agencies required to fully address these threats,” Makinde said.

The governor argued that no governor should bear responsibility without having the authority necessary to act. He promised to reform Nigeria’s security structure if elected president, insisting that states must have greater powers to respond to security threats.

“Decentralisation necessary for more effective security management will be prioritised. The safety and security of Nigerians will never be treated as a political slogan,” Makinde declared.

His statement has sparked outrage among parents of the 46 abducted pupils and teachers who remain in captivity weeks after the Oriire school attack. Many are questioning why the governor is asking them to wait until 2027 for action while children are suffering.
