Northern governors and traditional rulers have convened an emergency meeting in Kaduna to address the escalating security challenges confronting the region.

The session, which took place at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, was hosted by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State. The meeting brings together members of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Leaders Council in a joint effort to review the worsening security situation.

The forum is chaired by Gombe State Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, while the traditional council is led by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III. Both leaders are presiding over the closed-door deliberations, which officials say are focused primarily on rising incidents of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and farmer–herder clashes.

In recent months, Northern Nigeria has witnessed a surge in violent attacks, resulting in significant loss of life, destruction of property, and widespread displacement of communities. The ongoing meeting is expected to produce coordinated strategies aimed at strengthening security operations, improving intelligence-sharing, and enhancing collaboration between state governments and traditional institutions.

Officials noted that the outcome of the discussions may shape the region’s next steps in tackling insecurity, as governors and traditional rulers seek more unified and effective approaches to restoring peace.
