More than 200 professors and other academic staff have reportedly resigned from Kaduna State University (KASU) over poor conditions of service and the university’s failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement, according to the KASU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The ASUU-KASU chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed this on Monday at a press conference held at the union’s secretariat in Kaduna. He said the agreement, which took effect in January 2026, had yet to be implemented or domesticated by KASU, despite repeated appeals to the university management, Governing Council, the state government and other stakeholders.

According to the union, eight months after the agreement was signed, KASU had still not commenced implementation, while several federal and state universities had either implemented the agreement or announced timelines for doing so, including the payment of accrued arrears.

ASUU said the delay had contributed to academic staff becoming among the least-paid university workers in the country, while salary arrears dating back to January 2026 continue to accumulate.

The union also linked the departure of experienced academic staff, including professors and lecturers, to the poor conditions of service. It warned that the loss of experienced personnel could take years for the university to recover from.

Two-week ultimatum

ASUU-KASU has issued a two-week ultimatum to the university authorities and other relevant stakeholders to take concrete steps towards the full implementation and domestication of the agreement.

The union said its Congress, at a meeting on August 12, 2026, resolved to declare an industrial dispute and embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike if its demands are not addressed.

The decision is also in line with a resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.

Beyond the FGN-ASUU agreement, the union listed several outstanding local issues, including:

ASUU-KASU appealed to the university management and other authorities to treat the issues urgently to avert industrial action and preserve peace and stability at the institution.

The union also called on parents, stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in the dispute and help prevent a looming strike.
