A social media handler, Rowland Haarstrup, also known as Don Tobechukwu on X, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation after referring to the revered Yoruba deity, Ogun, as a “demon”.

This inflammatory comment has been widely denounced as a blatant example of religious hatred and intolerance.

The controversy began when Rowland commented on an X post by a man who was expressing his devotion to Ogun, stating his beliefs and practices. Rowland responded by accusing the man of insanity, saying “You gather car spare parts wey dem arrange for Japan, you pour palm oil on top am, you dey bow to am. Insanity wey pass this one never dey, ajeh.”

He further addressed Ogun as a “demon”, sparking widespread criticism and outrage online.

Many have accused Rowland’s comments as religious extremism and fundamentalism, highlighting the increasing trend of intolerance and disrespect towards other people’s beliefs and practices in Nigeria.

“Ogun is a revered deity in Yoruba culture and religion, and referring to it as a ‘demon’ is not only disrespectful but also ignorant,” said one online commentator.

Another user added, “This kind of comment is not only an insult to the Yoruba people but also a reflection of the growing intolerance and extremism in our society.”

Rowland’s comments have sparked a heated debate online, with many calling for greater respect and understanding towards other people’s beliefs and practices.

As one user aptly put it, “We need to learn to respect and tolerate each other’s differences, rather than resorting to insults and name-calling.”

The controversy has also raised questions about the role of social media in promoting intolerance and extremism, and the need for greater awareness and education about different cultures and religions.
