OAU Students Kick Against Slight Reduction of Tuition Fee, Call for Renegotiation

September 27, 2023 2 min read

The students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state through its student union leadership have kicked against the slight reduction of tuition fees after a 300 percent increment.

It would be recalled that the management had increased the tuition fee by 300%, however, after rejection by the student union leadership, they slightly reduced the tuition fee on Monday.

In the latest development, the Student Union of OAU through its Public Relations Officer, Elijah Omisore, in a statement on Tuesday, September 26, rejected the slight reduction of tuition fees and called for renegotiation.

According to the release, “We commend the Management for their willingness to make concessions and reductions in the fees. However, the leadership of the union finds it necessary to state that no agreement was made with the school management as regards the increment of school fees.

“The leadership of the union recognises the supremacy of congressional resolutions and on this basis, has not been authorized to agree to any other figure besides the 50% reduction as agreed at the congress.”

He added: “The leadership of the union will meet with the relevant committee set up by the congress and will also table the discussions between us and the management before the congress for transparent and open deliberation by students.”

The union ordered that students of the institution should suspend any payment activities until a final and favourable agreement was reached.
