The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) authorities disallowed the Yoruba National Unity Day 2024 event scheduled to hold on the school premises.

The event, aimed at promoting unity and self-determination among Yoruba people, was disallowed just hours before its commencement.

According to a source who spoke to Yoruba Nation RadioTV said the organizers received notification of cancellation because the event was not of Federal Government but Yoruba event.

The source noted in his statement that Obafemi Awolowo University was founded with funds generated from Yoruba cocoa businesses, a legacy of the region’s economic prowess.

According to the source who spoke in the viral video obtained by TYT, β€œOrganizers initially secured approval to use Oduduwa Hall, the largest venue on campus, for the Yoruba event. However, authorities suddenly revoked permission, suggesting the group find a private hall within the campus instead.

β€œUndeterred, organizers relocated to CT Hall, paying the required fees. But in a surprising late-night move (7:30-8 pm), school authorities notified them that the Yoruba event was disallowed on campus premises because it’s a Yoruba event” source stated.

Some Yoruba leaders of have expressed disappointment, stating, “This decision undermines Yoruba people’s rights to assemble and promote their cultural heritage.”

No official statement has been released by OAU management yet.
