The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to Federal Government to embark on a nationwide economic shutdown if the Nigerian Police detain Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NLC President.

The police had invited Ajaero to their headquarters last night for questioning regarding allegations of terrorism financing, among other issues.

This situation prompted an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the Labour House, where the Congress decided to request an extension from the police to consult with their lawyers.

During a briefing for workers gathered at the Labour House in support of Ajaero and to accompany him to the police station, NLC Deputy President Kabiru Ado Sani stated that the invitation to Ajaero was effectively an invitation to all workers.

He explained, “Following our meeting, we have made several resolutions. We are committed to upholding the rule of law and due process. We will honor the Nigerian police’s invitation, but we need additional time to consult with our lawyers. This invitation was extended yesterday, requiring Ajaero to report by 10 am today.

“We are working with our lawyers to secure an extension, but this does not legitimize the charges against the Congress leadership. Furthermore, if our President is arrested or detained, we will alert our affiliates to mobilize and ensure that all workers across the country cease their services.

“This decision is crucial because our organization is a collective responsibility. We must protect it vigorously. We appreciate your support and ask that you wait for further instructions from our leadership.

“Regardless of the outcome, we will keep you informed through your leadership. We ask you to remain calm, return to your workplaces, and await further directives.”
