A devastating fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Niger State has claimed the lives of 86 people, with 55 others injured and hospitalized.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday morning when a speeding fuel tanker crashed and exploded, engulfing nearby residents who were attempting to scoop fuel from the tanker.

According to Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, the death toll rose from 70 on Saturday to 86, with more corpses recovered and given a mass burial in Dikko, Niger State. Baba-Arah disclosed that 80 of the victims were buried in a mass grave, while five were taken by their relatives for burial, and one died at the hospital.

The mass burial was conducted by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, in collaboration with Gurara Local Government Area and volunteers, between 5 pm and midnight.

The agency has confirmed that the number of injured now stands at 55, with one death recorded at the hospital.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago visited the scene of the explosion on Saturday and has since issued a ban on vehicles coming from the Maje axis from passing over the Dikko Bridge.

The Governor cited the recklessness of some drivers as the reason for the directive, instructing them instead to follow the underpass and take the appropriate U-turn.

The fuel tanker explosion has sent shockwaves throughout the community, highlighting the need for increased safety measures and responsible driving practices.
