Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have foiled a coordinated attack by fighters of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) on Gamboru Ngala, a strategic border town in northern Borno State.

The insurgents reportedly stormed the town through the Flatari axis around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday in an attempt to breach the defensive perimeter and overrun a military position. However, alert troops swiftly engaged them in a fierce gun duel, forcing the terrorists to retreat under heavy fire.

Security sources confirmed that no casualties were recorded on the part of the troops, while an ongoing clearance operation was launched to pursue the fleeing insurgents.

β€œThe soldiers responded with superior firepower, successfully repelling the assault. The situation has since been stabilised and normal activities have resumed,” one source said.

Residents of Gamboru Ngala, which shares a border with Cameroon, praised the swift military response, noting that the town’s position along transnational trade routes has made it a recurring target for insurgent attacks.

The latest encounter underscores the renewed momentum of ongoing counterterrorism operations across the North-East aimed at dismantling Boko Haram and ISWAP networks entrenched in border communities.
