Lagos State is set to make history by hosting Africa’s inaugural electric boat race, the E1 Championship, on October 4th and 5th, 2025.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this development following a visit to Monaco, where he witnessed the electric powerboat championship.

The event marks a significant step for Lagos, showcasing its involvement in global discussions on sustainable energy, eco-friendly practices, and cutting-edge marine technology.

The E1 Championship is a pioneering series featuring all-electric raceboats, aimed at promoting emission-free mobility on water.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed pride in Lagos’ selection as the first African host city for the event.

β€œThis weekend, we were in Monaco experiencing the E1 Racing Championship. It was a good reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking.

β€œI’m proud to share that Lagos will become the first African city to host the E1 Championship on October 4th and 5th, 2025. That’s a major milestone for the sport and for what it says about our city. It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” Sanwo-Olu’s post read in part.

Sanwo-Olu mentioned that hosting the E1 Championship provides Lagos with an opportunity to showcase its culture, vitality, and potential to an international audience.

He also noted that the event will enhance the state’s reputation as a progressive, environmentally aware city.
