The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has alleged that human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, does not possess a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.

Jimoh made the claim on Wednesday while featuring on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme monitored in Lagos. He said Sowore was posted to Adamawa State for the mandatory one-year national service but allegedly failed to report for duty or complete the exercise.

According to him, the activist was declared wanted for allegedly mobilising individuals to cause public disturbance and block major highways under the guise of protest.

β€œI want to make it abundantly clear that Sowore doesn’t have an NYSC certificate because of punitive reasons. He was posted to Adamawa and was evasive. He never did his service,” the Commissioner said.

Jimoh questioned Sowore’s moral standing to rally members of the public for demonstrations when he had not fulfilled what he described as a basic civic responsibility expected of graduates in Nigeria.

The Commissioner further stated that security agencies would not allow any action capable of disrupting public peace or obstructing economic activities in Lagos.

As of the time of filing this report, Sowore has not publicly responded to the claim.
