A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has advised graduates who have been searching for jobs for over five years to keep their certificate and learn a skill.
According to Igbokwe, he decided to go into business after three years of job hunting, a decision he was grateful he made.
Giving the advice via his Facebook page on Friday, June 21, Igbokwe wrote: “Let me repeat this advice one more time. If you are a university or polytechnic graduate and you have looking for a job for 3, 4, or 5 yrs, please keep your certificate and go and learn a skill.
“I left UNN in 1985 and finished my Youth Service in Ogun State in 1986. I read Mechanical Engineering. 1987, 1988 passed and nothing happened. As 1989 was approaching I took a decision to go into business. One thing led to another and today when I look back I appreciate God Almighty raising me to be more than I can be. It was a very hard decision and it paid me handsomely.
Listing some of his roles, he continued: “I was still doing my private business when Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is now PBAT invited me to serve as GM LASIMRA in Lagos in 2005. When Fashola came on Board in 2007 he retained me for another 8 years in the same Agency. Governor Ambode came in 2015 and moved me to Wharf Landing Fees Authority Apapa till 2019. When Governor Sanwo Olu came in 2019 he made me Special Adviser on Drainage & Water Resources in his cabinet till 2023. I have moved back to my private business after leaving the cabinet.
“Try this road to success and thank me later. Good afternoon everyone.”
