The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to political parties and their supporters to desist from engaging in premature campaigning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released by the Commission on Monday, INEC reiterated that the Electoral Act clearly outlines the timeline for political campaigns, emphasizing that any activity outside the legally allowed period constitutes a violation.

The Commission expressed concern over recent reports and activities by certain political actors, which it described as β€œearly and unlawful.” INEC stated that such actions undermine the integrity of the electoral process and may attract sanctions as provided by law.

INEC called on all stakeholders, especially political parties, to respect the electoral calendar and focus on strengthening internal party structures and preparing for a credible and peaceful election.

“The Commission will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against any political party or individual found to be flouting the rules,” the statement warned.

INEC also appealed to the media and the general public to support the enforcement of electoral laws by refraining from promoting or broadcasting unauthorized political campaigns.

The 2027 general elections are expected to hold in the first quarter of that year, with the official campaign window yet to be announced.
