ICAN Opens Probe into Alleged Examination Malpractice

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has commenced a formal investigation into allegations of examination malpractice following a viral video that sparked widespread public concern.

The video, which circulated over the weekend, shows a woman accused of impersonating a candidate during one of ICAN’s professional examinations. She was alleged to have sat for the exam on behalf of a senior government official in Taraba State.

Reacting to the controversy, ICAN’s Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lanre Olasunkanmi, described the allegations as “grave” and reiterated the institute’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice. He emphasized that ICAN operates under international best practices and would not hesitate to apply strict disciplinary measures against anyone found culpable.

“The integrity of our examination process is sacrosanct. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. This investigation will be thorough, and the outcome will be made public,” Olasunkanmi stated.

ICAN, established by Act of Parliament in 1965, conducts multiple levels of professional examinations each year, including the Foundation, Skills, and Professional stages. With thousands of candidates across the country, the exams are regarded as one of the most rigorous gateways into professional accounting practice in Nigeria.

The institute has, in the past, sanctioned candidates and members involved in malpractice ranging from impersonation to collusion with invigilators. In recent years, it has also introduced biometric verification and electronic monitoring to tighten security during its examinations.

Olasunkanmi urged the public to remain calm while the investigation is ongoing, warning against speculation that could undermine the credibility of the process.

The development has reignited public debates about integrity in Nigeria’s professional examinations, with many stakeholders stressing the need for transparency and stiffer penalties for offenders.
