The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched an investigation into a recent incident where one of its personnel was assaulted by a motorist.
The incident, which occurred on November 7, 2024, along the OKO-ADO Lekki Epe expressway in Lagos State, has sparked widespread condemnation from the FRSC and other stakeholders.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident began when a patrol team flagged down a Toyota Corolla with registration number EPE690HH for seatbelt violation.
Upon requesting the vehicle papers, it was discovered that they had expired since December 2022, leading to the impoundment of the vehicle.
However, things took a turn for the worse when a female passenger in the vehicle became provocative, verbally assaulting the arresting Marshal and threatening to prosecute them for doing their job.
She further created a scene, attempting to garner sympathy from other road users. When her antics failed, she resorted to physical assault, which was captured on video.
The FRSC has condemned the incident in strong terms, warning motorists against violent behavior towards its personnel.
The Corps Marshal, in a statement, described the incident as “unacceptable” and vowed to take decisive action against the perpetrators.
“We will not tolerate any form of violence or assault on our personnel,” the Corps Marshal said. “We urge motorists to respect the law and treat our personnel with dignity and respect.”
The FRSC has also commended the Unit Commander, Chief Route Commander AM Usman, and the entire staff of the Command for exhibiting high levels of professionalism and civility amidst the provocative actions of the motorist.
Their actions, according to the Corps Marshal, “represent the ideals of the Corps.”
The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the violent behavior of the motorist. The FRSC has also called on the public to report any incidents of violence or assault on its personnel.
As the investigation into the incident continues, the FRSC has warned motorists against violent behavior, stating that “Justice will not only be served, but done speedily so as to serve as a deterrent to other violent road users.”
