State House Dismisses Peter Obi’s Call for Tinubu’s Resignation as “Childish, Hollow, and an Unwarranted Distraction”
The Presidency has dismissed Peter Obi’s call for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation as “childish” and “an unwarranted distraction,” describing it as a selective and distorted view of Nigeria’s realities since 2023.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency argued that Obi’s comparison with the British Prime Minister’s voluntary exit is misplaced, noting that Nigeria operates a presidential system where the president is elected to a fixed four-year term .
The statement highlighted the recent victories of President Tinubu and his party in the Ekiti State governorship election and other by-elections as evidence of his popularity with Nigerians. “The election results, some early referendum of sorts, show that President Tinubu and his party are popular with Nigerians. This should be more concerning for Peter Obi and his new Special Purpose Vehicle, NDC, as we move towards the January 2027 election.”
On security, the Presidency noted that despite inherited challenges, significant progress has been made under Tinubu’s leadership, with hundreds of people rescued from captivity, terrorist kingpins neutralised, and over 15,000 terrorists taken off the streets. The government has expanded investments in security by deploying advanced technologies and drones .
On the economy, the statement cited positive GDP growth every quarter, trade surpluses, foreign reserves hitting over $50 billion, oil production rising to about 1.8 million barrels per day, and the stock market All-Share Index rising from 50,000 to over 250,000. The Naira-to-dollar exchange rate has been stable, and Foreign Direct and Portfolio Investments are at record highs .
The Presidency also noted that President Tinubu has set records in infrastructure delivery, built concrete roads, and actualised the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry superhighways. The administration has also provided interest-free loans to nearly two million tertiary students and ensured no disruption of the academic calendar by trade unions .
On power supply, the statement clarified that President Tinubu did not promise 24-hour electricity for all but rather said, “Whichever way, by all means necessary, you will have electricity, and you will not pay for estimated bills anymore.” The administration has signed the Electricity Act, rolled out prepaid meters, and intensified off-grid solar power provision .
The Presidency concluded that Obi’s call for resignation is “childish and hollow,” a political grandstand, and an unworthy distraction. “True leadership means staying the course, learning, adapting, and delivering results. President Tinubu has shown he is up to the task, and Nigeria is on the path to progress.”
